Frequently Asked Questions

What size is a classic subway tile?

3x6 inches. It is still the most ordered size here, though 2x8, 3x12 and 4x12 have taken over in newer kitchens because the longer brick reads more current.

What grout colour works with white subway tile?

White or off white grout keeps the wall calm and makes the field read as one surface. A grey or black grout draws the grid and suits a graphic, more industrial kitchen. Pick the grout with the tile in hand, not from a screen.

Is zellige the same as subway tile?

Zellige is handmade Moroccan tile, usually in a similar brick shape, with an uneven glazed face and visible colour variation. It reads much livelier than a machine made ceramic subway and it costs more to install because every piece is slightly different.

Can subway tile go on a shower wall?

Yes. Ceramic, porcelain, glass and sealed marble subway all work on shower walls. Keep the tile rated for wall use and use a proper waterproofing membrane behind it.

Subway Tile

Subway tile in the shapes people actually ask for: the classic 3x6, plus longer 2x8, 3x12 and 4x12 bricks that suit a modern kitchen. The range runs across glazed terracotta, thin brick, marble, glass, ceramic and zellige, from about $5 to $30 per square foot.

The material sets the mood more than the shape does. Glossy ceramic is crisp and cheap to cover a lot of wall. Zellige and handmade terracotta have an uneven face that catches light and reads warm. Honed marble subway is the quiet, expensive looking option.

Layout changes the look as much as the tile: a half offset brick bond is the default, a stacked vertical run makes a small wall feel taller, and herringbone turns the same tile into a feature. Order fifteen percent extra for herringbone.
