Noce travertine, a small round bowl

This round vessel sink is carved by hand from Noce brown travertine quarried in Turkey. Each bowl comes from a single block of stone, so the color and texture are genuinely its own. At 12.5 inches in diameter and 6 inches high, it is a compact bowl with real presence, and it sits on top of the vanity where the warm brown stone stays in view.

Design

Warm brown, honed and filled

Noce is a warm brown travertine with organic veining that runs through the stone. The finish is honed and filled: honing gives a smooth matte surface, and filling closes the natural pits of the travertine so the bowl reads as even and finished. The interior is smooth, so water runs cleanly toward the drain without pooling, and the curved rim helps direct it there. There are no hard edges or crevices to trap debris. Because the bowl is carved from natural stone, the shade of brown, the veining and the texture vary from piece to piece. Moderate color variation is normal for Noce travertine.

Where to use it

A compact bowl with presence

The 12.5 inch bowl gives enough room for washing while its small footprint suits a powder room, a guest bath or a narrow vanity that a larger sink would overwhelm. Vessel sinks are also simpler to fit than undermount sinks: they need a single hole for the drain and enough flat surface to support the base, so an existing vanity top can often be used without costly changes. The warm brown tone suits modern, contemporary, traditional and transitional bathrooms. The 4 cm drain hole takes standard drain fittings, and the walls are 2 to 3 cm thick.

Installation

Set it on a flat vanity

The bowl sits above the vanity, so the top must be flat, level and strong enough to support solid stone. A single drain hole is cut in the counter to line up with the 4 cm drain, and the bowl is set in silicone around its base. Because the rim stands 6 inches above the counter, the faucet must reach over it: a tall vessel faucet on the deck or a wall-mounted spout. On a 12.5 inch bowl the spout should land near the center, so check the reach before drilling.
