Frequently Asked Questions

Is honed marble a good idea in a kitchen?

It is the usual recommendation. The matte surface hides the etch marks that acids leave, so daily cooking shows much less than it would on a polish.

Does honed stone stain more easily?

It can. The surface is slightly more open than a polished one, so oil and wine have an easier path in. Sealing and wiping spills promptly takes care of it.

Will honed look lighter than polished?

Usually yes. Polishing deepens color and sharpens veining, while honing softens both, so the same stone reads a shade lighter and quieter.

Can a polished slab be honed instead?

Yes. Fabricators hone slabs to order, so if you like a stone that is listed as polished, ask us and we will quote it honed.

Honed Slabs

Honing stops short of the final polish, so the surface stays matte and soft to the eye. Scratches, etch marks and water spots are far less visible than on a gloss finish, which is why honed marble is the usual answer for a kitchen that gets cooked in every day.

The trade off is color: a honed stone reads lighter and quieter than the same stone polished. If you want the veining to pop, compare with polished slabs, or start from marble slabs.
